Professor Sandie Mary Yvonne

Day Twenty Six,

Buzzwordy tilted his head back and saw the middle-aged man reaching forward to snatch the social media book from the book shelf.  Without any hesitation, he grabbed the book and darted towards the fiction aisle.

"You, hey you over there!  I told you before that no one should touch that book.  What is wrong with this world when a reputable and educated business professor gets no respect from the working stiffs!" screamed the middle-aged man in a trench coat.

Buzzwordy played his cool without responding.  He found an empty chair next to the fiction aisle and plunged himself deep into it.

"Are you deaf?  Don't you know who I am?  I've taught so many working stiffs in my career and don't even get an ounce of appreciation.  Look, I don't have time to waste on you, just hand that book over now!" demanded the business professor.

Many questions were going through Buzzwordy's mind.  He could either play cool or put on his boxing gloves to confront the professor.  He could also get Mosaic, the stoned clerk in the bookstore involved if he wanted to.  But he ended up deciding on an even better trap for the business professor.

"Oh, hi!  Didn't I hear you said that you're a business professor at some local college?  Do you teach marketing or economics?  I'm Buzzwordy by the way.  I suppose that both of us are looking for the same kind of social media book so we could stay ahead of the learning crowd." smiled Buzzwordy as he reached his hand out to shake the professor's hand.

Buzzwordy's move shocked the professor and he wasn't quite sure how to take it.  Reluctantly, he also reached his hand out to shake Buzzwordy's hand.

"Alright!  I'm Sandie, professor Sandie, and that is how I'm called.  I teach marketing over at the local junior college.  Look, Buzzwordy, I got to run so lets keep our conversations short!" reacted the professor with a glaring discomfort.

"This is absolutely wonderful.  I'm also in marketing myself.  It is always a pleasure for me to bump into some intellectuals once in a while.  What is your take on the future of social media and how will this trend impact the traditional marketing role today?" probed Buzzwordy.

Sandie took a deep breath, fetched a discolored scarf from his trench coat pocket and wrapped it around his neck, and gazed at Buzzwordy intensively.  It was Sandie's odd behavior that reminded him about how cold the professor's hand was.

"Umm, my fellow marketing stiff, your question is an interesting one.  Like you, I'm also looking for answers myself.  That is why I need to pick up these books.  Do you get my point now?" replied Sandie.

"Great response Sandie!  Since both of us are seeking for the same answer and this social media book tends to provide some insights, I think it will be beneficial for you and I to each have a copy so we can all read and compare notes in a week time.  What do you think?" suggested Buzzwordy.

Sandie squeezed and twisted his scarf like a pretzel, stuck his tongue out, and paced back and forth in the fiction aisle for several minutes.  Buzzwordy knew that his suggestion got the professor thinking hard and that was a very encouraging sign.

"Alright, Mr. marketing stiff, before I agree to anything, why don't you tell me what your plan is?  Will you be willing to come to my class and share your social media insights with me and my students within two weeks?" proposed Sandie.

Buzzwordy stared at Sandie like a cobra eying on his prey.  He tried to remember if he had scheduled some out-of-town trips in two weeks, made family commitments, ... etc.  Nothing came up.

"Sounds like a deal Sandie.  I accept your invitation.  Lets exchange our contact information!" agreed Buzzwordy.

Sandie spat on his palm and grabbed Buzzwordy's hand to ink the deal.  This was his way of solidifying an agreement.  He left his business card behind and took off like a bat out of hell.

"Call me to fix the date!" yelled Sandie.

"Professor Sandie Mary Yvonne!" laughed Buzzwordy hysterically as he stared at the business card.

Don't go anywhere, Buzzwordy will be back on Day Twenty Seven.

Day Twenty Five,

Buzzwordy was never much of a party animal to begin with.  He seldom attended private parties on weekends and preferred to hop from one bookstore to another one.  What was he seeking from these bookstores?

"Knowledge, cutting-edge knowledge!  I really don't care what they are as long as they are new, mind-provoking, and potentially revolutionary!" confessed Buzzwordy.

He would spend countless hours combing the business and technology shelves, zipping through book titles, and stopping to read a few stimulating books.  He might end up buying a few that really intrigued him, however, his normal trait was to quickly review the summary section in each chapter and jotted down some relevant notes for his future references.

It was one of those hot summer weekends again, and Buzzwordy was anxious to bid farewell to his family after their short but memorable lunch gathering.  He headed straight towards his usual book joint - full of life and anticipations.  His smile was natural and unpretentious, and just about everyone in the mall could notice it.

"Hi Mosaic, good to see you again!  Any new and exciting business titles since last Saturday?" queried Buzzwordy as he first entered the bookstore.

"Not too sure Buzzwordy, I haven't had a chance to check this morning!" responded a bald and skinny girl with a light bulb tattoo across her forehead.

"No sweat Mosaic, I'll check it out!" acknowledged Buzzwordy.

"If you doo... find what you are looking for, let me know.  This way, you can help turn my light bulb on!" chanted Mosaic in a trance-like manner as she rubbed her forehead facetiously.

Buzzwordy didn't bother to respond to her.  He knew that when Mosaic was behaving in a somewhat disconnected way, it would be best not to disturb her.

"Wow, I've been looking for this social media book for quite sometime!" screamed the excited Buzzwordy when he approached the technology shelf.

Before he could touch the tip of that book, a husky voice from behind shook him up unexpectedly.

"Hold your horse.  No one is going to touch my book.  Now back off from the shelf!" ordered a middle-aged man in a trench coat.

This man moved at a lightening speed and before Buzzwordy could figure out how to respond to him, he had already snatched the book and made his way to the check-out line.

"How despicable can this blunderbuzz (Note) be!" snarled Buzzwordy.

He walked towards the business shelf hoping to find another book with the same title and bingo, he found one more book hidden behind a large hard-covered business reference book.

"Hold it, just hold it right there!  You need to back off from my book!" shouted the same middle-aged man in a trench coat.

What should Buzzwordy do?  We will wait for his return on Day Twenty Six.

I'll call Bif right away!

Day Twenty Four,

I'll call Bif right away!

Once Xavia sat himself down nice and comfy in the chair, he gave Buzzwordy and the entire panel a thumb up gesture.  A typical move by Xavia to let everyone know that he was ready to engage.

"Let's resume the discussions!  I can tell that Mr. X is ready!" yelled Petro, the tall and scraggy magazine editor whose eyes were fixated on the activities on the podium.

Buzzwordy repeated the second question regarding which technologies were best suited for smart grid.  Both Blummy and Xavia were fighting to give their answers.

"Thank you Blummy and Xavia for your active participation, however, I really want Shellow to answer this question.   I believe the audience share my sentiment as well!" intercepted Buzzwordy while he peeked fiercely at Shellow.

"Yeah!" shouted some small group of people from the back of the room.

Shellow continued to offer her signature smile without blurting a word.  Buzzwordy could sense that the audience were losing their patience with her.  He murmured to himself that it would be better off to finish the panel without her participation.

"Everyone, please pay attention to what I'm going to tell you.  Since a grid topology can cover an extremely large area, communication technologies like WiMAX, wireless mesh, fiber optics, and powerline can all be the candidates.  There are many companies entering into the smart grid or what others call future grid market.  All the big nations are involved - U.S., Germany, UK, China, Japan, ... etc.  Since there are many global and regional initiatives concerning smart grid, it is definitely an exciting area to pay attention to." spoke Shellow unexpectedly.

"Yup, the lady's comment makes sense!" applauded Petro.

Buzzwordy was caught completely off-guard by Shellow's move.  He was joyfully surprised but remained cautious about her, especially when he witnessed her uncanny signature smile right after she delivered her statement.

For the remaining time of his panel, he threw out 2 more questions to the panelists, and was royally pleased to see all of them chiming in with their opinions.  Blummy, Xavia and Shellow were all actively speaking up.  On a couple of occasions, Xavia challenged Blummy's answers but it was Shellow who won the audience's salutation.  No matter how aggressive Shellow was during the debate, she always managed to revert back to her signature smile the moment her lips stopped moving.

"Well folks, I guess that the smart grid panel is officially over.  I want to thank my panel of experts for their professional knowledge and active participation.  Also, I would like to send my many thanks to this crowd here.  You guys are great!" exclaimed Buzzwordy as he saluted the panel and the audience with a near 90 degree bow.

The crowd cheered on while Buzzwordy and his panelists stepped down from the podium.

"Good job Buzzwordy.  I'll call Bif right away and tell him what happened!" grinned Xavia.

"You're welcome Xavia.  Thanks for your help!" replied Buzzwordy.

Xavia left the room in a hurry in order to make a quick call to Bif.  Buzzwordy shook hands with Blummy and Shellow, and wished them the best of luck in their future endeavors before heading over to one of the cafe houses for a quick cup of latte and a piece of pound cake.

He felt completely at ease.  All he wanted was to sit inside a cafe and sip his latte while devouring his pound cake.

Great job Buzzwordy!  Lets see what Day Twenty Five has in stock for you.

Day Twenty Three,

Never abandon your team!

"Going once and going twice Ty, do you have an answer for us?" questioned Buzzwordy.

The perplexed Ty continued to flip through his notes but failed to identify the right answer to Buzzwordy's question.

"Actually, the answer is quite simple.  If the audience doesn't mind, I would like to chime in now." volunteered Blummy, the freelance writer.

"Please do so since we're under time pressure." answered Buzzwordy readily.

"OK!  In my opinion, any successful business has to do with making its products or services affordable so that everyone can use them.  If you look at a superstore such as Walmart, the reason why it attracts so many patrons is because it sells a lot of decent and affordable products.  It is strictly a volume-driven business model.  Undeniably, a very well run business no matter how you look at it.  Now, if you put the right technologies on top of an efficiently run retail store, it can even excel.  WiFi is a great example.  Before I get into the utility sector, I would like to mention RFID.  This is a short-range wireless communication technology that enables remote sensing and reading of merchandise, and large superstores like Walmart are implementing it to optimize their operational efficiency.  I think the concept is quite straightforward - great products and services that are backed by great technologies.  This is the ultimate business model!" explained Blummy.

The audience looked engaged and Buzzwordy was impressed by Blummy's clear and well spoken words.

"So, lets talk about the utility sector.  In reality, the same common sense business model that makes superstores like Walmart and Target successful can also make utility companies like PG&E, Florida Power and Light, and Con Edison successful.  The secret recipe is affordability.  All these utility companies operate grids - these giant but old energy grids that connect them with their subscribers and most of them are long overdue for their needed overhaul.  It is time to throw some smartness over these grids so that they could become intelligent.  Let me tell you, the smarter the grid gets, the more money will the utility company make, and the more saving can a household receive.  This is the epitome of a win-win business model." exclaimed Blummy.

"Great answer Blummy!  Ty and Shellow, do you guys have anything to add to Blummy's explanation, if not, I will move to the next question?" concurred Buzzwordy in a jubilant voice.

Ty didn't even bother to respond to Buzzwordy while Shellow gave everyone a broad smile that showed her full set of heavenly sculptured white teeth.  It was obvious that she was in total agreement with Blummy's answer.

"Wonderful, lets jump right into the second question!  This time, let me start with Shellow because I could tell that she's been waiting impatiently since the start of this panel.  Here is the question: {What is the secret technology ingredient for making smart grid successful?}" asked Buzzwordy.

"If the audience doesn't mind, may be I could chime in!" offered Blummy cheekily.

"Thanks Blummy but I think this is Shellow's turn!" countered Buzzwordy.

He peeked at Shellow and saw her wide grin again.  The troublesome sign was that there was nothing beyond the smile or grin.  She was either too nervous or lost because her body was as rigid as an Egyptian mummy.

"Well Shellow, can I expect an input from you?" probed Buzzwordy.

It was that broad grin again and this time, her perfect teeth were completely revealed.  Just like before, she was motionless and expressionless.

"Hey, the lady up there!  Lets hear your take on the question since you are one of the experts here!" shouted Petro.  The crowd began to echo Petro's request and Buzzwordy saw Xavia giving him a "switch the panelist" hand signal.

Before Buzzwordy could say anything, he noticed that Ty got up from his chair and began walking towards an exit.

"Excuse me Ty, is there something wrong?  We're in the middle of a panel discussion!" shouted the puzzled Buzzwordy.

"Oh Buzzwordy, Ty told me that he has completely lost his thoughts and there is no way for him to stay focused on the questions.  He thinks that leaving the panel now makes sense for him." explained Blummy.

"What?  We still have 3 more questions to go and he just can't bail out like this.  This is totally unacceptable!" shrieked Buzzwordy hysterically.

All of a sudden, there was a commotion among the audience and people began to exit the conference room.  Ty's unexpected departure was enough to send Buzzwordy on a downward spiral and he started to lose his composure.  The continuous ruckus had literally incapacitated Buzzwordy's mental ability to handle the panel, and he felt like a ship without a rudder.

"Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Xavia and I work with Buzzwordy.  I'm also very involved with the telco industry and can speak about smart grid to a certain extent.  Since Ty has to attend to some urgent matters, I will take over his role for the remaining portion of this panel.  I hope that all of you can stay!" announced Xavia.

Buzzwordy couldn't believe what was happening.  He was in awe.

"Lets resume Buzzwordy!  Never abandon your team." grinned Xavia.

I think Day Twenty Four will be a reposeful day.
